museum / ecomuseum | AGDE

After the landing of the allies in North Africa in November 1942, Hitler ordered the construction of the "wall of the Mediterranean', fortifications similar to those of the Atlantic coast. More than 900 bunkers were built, including a hundred for Agde, because Cap d'Agde is a point of advanced support for the defence of the Lion Gulf. The Tamarissière, a possible landing area, is strongly fortified and has 8 guns total along a beach, defended by mines and barbed wire. 50 bunkers of all kind (shooting, barracks, ammunition storage, kitchens, and so on) were built. Around 30 remain. At the center of this area, an imposing 100 m2 restored bunker-infirmary. In this bunker, you will discover both a German war vessel with its specificities of defence, but also the local history of these fortifications, the German organization in Agde in 1943, the life of the "Agathois" during the conflict and the restoration of the building.
