tourist offices and information points | SAINT-GUILHEM LE DESERT
Tucked away at the heart of the Valley of Gellone, the mediaeval village of Saint Guilhem Le Désert forms a natural stopping place with superb architecture.
The village which grew up around the abbey has retained its strongly mediaeval character. Its ancient streets follow the course of the stream called the Verdus which you can follow back up to the Infernet geological circus. Here walkers have a view of dizzying cliffs to which cling evergreen oak and strawberry trees.
Gellone Abbey has been a listed Historical monument since 1840 and was classed a World Heritage Site by UNESCO as part of the Saint James of Compostella route in France.
