One such celebration is the parading of "Totemic Animals" usually with massive bodies and minute heads. According to legend, these animals protect our towns and villages. Carried and operated by men, these "Totemic Animals" are presented to the people of the village once a year in a festival that still bears the hallmark of ancient pagan rituals.
The "Totemic Animal" parade usually coincides with village carnival and the local procession which take place between February and August. Some examples of such animals are: the Mèze bull, the Pézenas foal, the Béziers camel, the Gignac ass and in Le Pouget they have a tramp known as the Boumian.
