cave | SAINT-BAUZILLE DE PUTOIS

The Grotte des Demoiselles is situated 38 km north of Montpellier between Cévennes and Pic Saint Loup mountain. Discover giant stalagmites and stalagtites, calcite flows, giant columns, translucent draperies - a treasure trove for today's speleologists. It is one of the most famous natural caves accessible to tourists in the South of France and, with its exceptional underground cable railway (the first in Europe) and modern amenities, allows easy access for the general public.

Activities / products

average length of time : from 1:15 to 1:30 hour

Activities :
The underground funicular takes you almost to the top of the mountain passing in front of the life sized reconstruction of the 'Ursus Spelaeus', a prehistorical bear found in the cave. The guided visit in a total maze of rooms with evocative names; room of the royal coat, dear to the heart of the surrealist writer Andre Breton in his novel 'Mad love' (l'amour fou), another room is 'the dining room' of pioneers and explorers...to emerge as on a viewpoint above 'the cathedral of the abysses'. The circuit continues in the steps of the discoverers to 'the devil's footprint' and then down to the large room which is 70m below the Thaurac plateau. You are surrounded by legends of fairies, anecdotes, and up-to-date scientific discoveries about the natural underground and potholing, as you weave between the stalagmites and look in awe at the constellation of sparkling stalactites 50 m above your head. An amazing experience. The return is by cable railway through terraces and gardens with 160 species of Mediterranean flora.
