The 'Manufacture Nationale de la Savonnerie' is a workshop that belongs to the 'French National Mobilier' (a service that belongs to the French Ministry of Culture and deals with restauration and building of heritage furniture). At the Savonnerie, beautiful rugs in 'hautes lices' (weaving) are made by hand in the same way as they were made 5 centuries ago. They are made for embassies, national monuments and for the French President's Elysée.The site comprises a rug exhibition gallery and the production workshop where the 'liciers' (weavers) can be seen making those amazingly complicated and beautiful rugs, including reproductions of contempary artists (Stéphane Bordarier, Julien Gardair, Annick Top...).
