Fifteen kilometers from Montpellier, on an island that is today linked with the continent by a strip of coastline, stands the impressive cathedral of Maguelone, one of the most important places for christianity in the region. A historic monument in the roman style, the cathedral was the seat of the diocese for a thousand years. The origins of Maguelone are very old: there was a port in the Roman Empire, diocese from 6th to 16th century.
The Domain of Maguelone is located in an area of protected coastline with a broad variety of birds. The cathedral is at the heart of an island of greenery in a park, surrounded by vineyards, between sea and lagoons.
Since 1969, an establishment of Services and Aids by Work is occupying the former farm buildings. It aims at easier the social and professional integration of adults in situation of disability. Their main activities are the work in the vineyards, wine production and fishing. The wines are elaborated on-site following the method of the organic farming.
